Reliable and Fast Optimization with Driver Breaks and Full Vehicles

Teliae creates Transport Management Systems and integrates Vroom into the software that they provide to clients, allowing those clients to optimize routes inside Teliae's software. Before the team at Teliae discovered Vroom, their software users had the option to manage route optimization through a cumbersome settings system.

When the Teliae team found out about Vroom through the teams' involvement in OpenStreetMap, they decided to try it out and were quickly convinced to replace the cumbersome internal settings-based optimization system with an integration with the Vroom Premium API.

There were two things that won over the team at Teliae. First of all, the ability to collaborate directly with the creators of Vroom, including having a voice in decisions about the roadmap. Second, the speed at which the software would produce optimized routes. Jerome Petit, Innovation Director at Teliae, says that they had tested other optimization software and had to wait for around 15 minutes to get the optimized routes; with Vroom the optimized routes were ready in a matter of seconds.

For Teliae's clients, route optimization often has to happen in a strategic window in the morning between 6am and 9am. Before that time, the stops are unknown; after 9am the trucks need to be on the road. The ability to get fast optimization results means that Teliae's clients are able to iterate on routes if necessary while still finishing their routes in time.

Being able to collaborate directly with Verso means Teliae has a direct voice in how the Vroom roadmap evolves, and is able to improve the user experience for its customers as well — as well as for other transport management systems. For example, Teliae customers need to be able to manage breaks flexibly. Drivers need to be able to take a lunch break for an hour at some point between noon and 2pm, but the break has to be scheduled intelligently and doesn't need to be at a precise time every day.

Vroom is now also able to manage "full vehicle" problems. If a vehicle is scheduled to perform both drop-offs and pick-ups and leaves the depot full in the morning, it has to deliver its cargo before it can pick up additional cargo. This functionality was developed in direct collaboration with Teliae as a result of feedback from Telia's customers.

Thanks to the speed of Vroom's optimizations, Teliae customers are able to improve the user experience for their own customers by providing up-to-date arrival windows. Optimizations can be re-calculated throughout the day and communicated to the end customer, giving them a better experience and more accurate arrival time. In collaboration with Verso, Teliae has also created a setting that automatically re-calculates the route timing after each delivery, so that both drivers and end customers are aware of potential delays (or situations where the delivery will happen earlier than the scheduled time window). This was done using the Verso API "plan" endpoint in conjunction with the "solve" endpoint that manages the classic optimization calculations.

For Teliae's customers, the speed at which routes can be optimized has been decisive in convincing them to choose Teliae. "This is one of our arguments for why potential customers should choose our products, that we integrate with a route optimization platform that can give you an optimized shift schedule in 30 seconds in the morning," Petit said. But there's also a reliability question — other route optimization solutions would not always provide the same route twice when given exactly the same stops and constraints; whereas with Vroom customers could be confident that they are getting the best route, and that the optimization was repeatable.

Thanks to Vroom, our clients are able to benefit from all these features; they're able to manage their breaks, they're able to manage the full vehicle problem. And when our customers benefit, we benefit as well.
